The School of Optical and Electronic Information(SOEI) was founded on June 6th, 2012, by merging School of Optoelectronic Science and Engineering and Department of Electronic Science and Technology. The school currently offers 4 undergraduate programs, 8 master’s programs, 7 doctoral programs and 2 first-level disciplines of postdoctoral research stations. There are two national key disciplines in the fields of Optical Engineering and Microelectronics and Solid-state Electronics. In 2012 national primary discipline evaluation, the discipline of Optical Engineering ranked No.1 among Chinese universities.
SOEI now consists of 7 departments including Optical Communication and Optical Network Engineering, Laser Technology, Optoelectronics Engineering, Micro-electronics Engineering, Microelectronics, Electronic Science, Microwave Engineering. There are 2 experimental centers which are the Center of Optical and Electronic Experiment and the University Students Laboratory for Public Project. There are 6 important research platforms supported by the government, including National Engineering Center for Laser Machining, National Engineering Lab for Next Generation Internet Access Technology, MoE Key Lab for Electrical Information Functional Material, MoE Engineering Lab for Sensitive Ceramics, Hubei Optoelectronics Test Center, and Wuhan IC Design Engineering Technology Research Center. Huazhong University of Science and Technology signed an agreement with some microelectronics enterprises in November, 2014, including Wuhan Donghu High-Tech Zone, Wuhan XMC, and Wuhan Tianma. According to this agreement, Huazhong University of Science and Technology(Wuhan) Institute of Microelectronics will be constructed relying on the school.
The current enrollment is 4,165 with 2,918 undergraduate, 889 MS and 358 Ph.D. students. There are a total of 186 faculty and staffs in the School with 48 professors and 69 associate professors and senior engineers. Relying on faculties of two first-level disciplines including Optical Engineering and Electronic Science and Technology, the school has launched talent cultivation and discipline construction. Among the faculty, there are 4 academicians from home and abroad, 14 experts recruited in the One-thousand Talents Program by the Department of Organization of the CPC ( Communist Party of China), 2 Cheung Kong Scholars appointed by MoE, 1 winner of the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars，1 recruited in the One-hundred Talents Program by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 chief scientist of the National Basic Research Program of China (also known as the 973 Program); 1 recruited in the Distinguished Young Talents Program by the Department of Organization; 1 nationally outstanding teachers; 17 listed in the “Cross/New Century Outstanding Talents in University” of MoE and 7 sponsored by “ Chutian Scholar Program”. We have also recruited a number of internationally and nationally well-known scholars as visiting professors or advisory professors including the fellow of the China Engineering Academy Li Yanrong, the fellow of the German Academy of Science Martin Wegener, the fellow of IEEE Harris Vincent and Chen Yajie from the Northeastern University, USA.
Boasting first class teaching resources, it has become one of first nine “National Bases for Integrated Circuit Talent Cultivation ” jointly granted by Ministry of Education and Ministry of Science and Technology in 2003. The college was approved by Ministry of Education as “Experimental Zone for Interactive Cultivation of Group Creative Talents” in 2007 and later as a national pilot school in 2011. Since its establishment, the pilot school has implemented the education concept of “student oriented” in real earnest. Focusing on a series of core courses construction, being oriented to independent study and taking ability cultivation as the symbol, the college is endeavoring to cultivate applied scientists and excellent engineers with global vision and innovative spirit through reform and innovations in talent cultivating mechanism in Electro-Optical information.
