Dr. Zhang Zhaowei's research interests relate to mid-infrared lasers, solid state lasers, mid-infrared frequency combs, and frequency comb spectroscopy. He has a passion for developing innovative laser and photonic technologies for addressing our future societal and economic challenges (e.g. in health, environment, security, and sustainable development).

02/2010-09/2015: post-doc at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK, with Prof. Derryck T. Reid. Working on 3-4 µm mid-infrared optical parametric oscillator (OPO) frequency comb sources and their applications in environmental sensing and hazard detection. This fruitful research has generated 6 invited talks since 2013.
03/2007–01/2010: post-doc in Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC), University of Southampton, with Prof. Andy Clarkson. Worked on high-power thulium-doped fibre lasers and amplifiers.
10/2003–02/2007: PhD student in ORC, University of Southampton, with Dr. Morten Ibsen and Prof. David J. Richardson. Worked on tunable fibre Bragg gratings and their applications in telecom and fibre lasers. The title of my PhD thesis is: Passive and active Bragg gratings for optical networks.
05/2001–09/2003: R&D Engineer at ZTE Corporation, Beijing, China. Worked in telecomm industry on large-capacity, ultra-long-haul, commercial optical fibre transmission systems.
