On March 24th, Professor Zhigang Pan (David Z. Pan) was invited by Prof. Yu Hu to give us a brilliant report named Nanometer IC Design and Manufacturing: Challenges, Opportunities, and Outlooks. He is a professor (tenure track) from Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Texas at Austin. The report started with the introduction of UT Austin, one of the top technological universities in the world. Then by sketching the structure of Apple A8 processor, Prof. Pan raised the procedure of integrated circuit design and fabrication, as well as the challenges they encountered: intraconnection, energy consuming, leakage current and fever. Problems about photolithography were also emphasized. In the second part of the report, Prof. Pan presented us with some solutions centered on “More Moore and More-than-Moore”, and threw light upon the new applications of future nano integrated circuit. Finally, Prof. Pan gave a brief summary of his report. Teachers and students asked some questions they concerned, such as the business progress of Intel. The forum was held by Prof. Wenzhong Lv, vice dean of SOEI. Prof. Changsheng Xie from Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics, Prof. Xuecheng Zou, Prof. Yu Hu, Prof. Yongde Hao, Associate Prof. Zhige Zou and over 100 students from SOEI attended the forum.
