The Department of Microwave Engineering was established in August 26, 2012. It is a sub-institution under School of Optics and Electronic information, which was newly formed and reconstructed by HUST. There are currently 13faculties and staffs, including 4 full professors, 4 associate professors and 1 guest professor. The student body has 50 master graduate students and 8 Ph. D candidates. The research team currently includes: Magnetic Materials and Devices Institute, Institute of microwave technology applications, and so on.

Department of Microwave Engineering focuses on research of high-performance RF and microwave devices, circuits and systems; commits to provide reliable solutions to the electromagnetic interference problems in military / civil communication systems and keeps emphasis on the development of microwave magnetism and magneto-electronic applications. The current research topics include specialized RF and microwave devices and circuits, with anti-MAI technology and MMIC technology, stealth technology, soft/hard magnetic ferrite materials, metal powder-core material, magnetic materials, applications of microwave device, new electromagnetic metamaterials and technology of anti-electromagnetic interference.  Some of the faculties are the top expert in field of microwave stealth technology; the guest professors in National Key Laboratory for Electromagnetic Compatibility; and are the committee members of many authoritative academic associations, such as  Applied Magnetic Industry Association of China, National Magnetic Components and Ferrite Materials  Standardization Agencies.

Recently, Department of Microwave Engineering has conducted the National 863 Program, 973 Program, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Guangdong Provincial research, Wuhan Science and Technology Bureau and provincial projects and many major national basic-research projects, exploration and research projects, advance research national projects The average research funding per person is more than than 1 million / year. Some research results have been award with the national science and technology second prize / third prize, "the 10th Five Year Plan" Outstanding Project Award for electronic components. The research outcome has been used in some major national projects and has significantly contributed to the development and modernization of China's high-tech equipment; Meanwhile, the research results have also been widely used in automotive electronics, power electronics, near field communications, semiconductor and sensor industries, and achieved good economic and social benefits. More than one hundred of academic articles have been published on Phys Rev E, Appl Phys Lett, J Appl Phys, PIER, J Am Ceram Soc, IEEE Trans Magn, IEEE Magn Lett and other industry leading journals.

The department currently owns many advanced microwave test/measurement equipment, design and simulation softwares, magnetic materials preparation and microscopic characterization of static and microwave systems, specifically including: Agilent N5245 (50GHz) X parameter vector network analyzer, Agilent E8267D (44GHz) vector signal source, Agilent N9930A (50GHz) spectrum analyzer (50GHz), E5052B (50GHz) signal source analyzer, Comsol, ADS2014, Ansys software companies, such as high-frequency, scanning electron microscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction, electron universal testing machine, microwave darkroom, magnetron sputtering instrument, such as high-end equipment.

The goal of Department Microwave Engineering is to cultivate outstanding students with both scientific and cultural horizons broad humanities integrated talent, in order to meet the needs of state development and construction. The cultivating plan starts with 1-2 years of general education courses on the basis of the learning phase regardless of specialty, aiming to construct a solid foundation  for subsequent professional learning and future development; In professional learning phase, it focuses on enhancing the professional knowledge by a series of electronic and microwave course and training on a first-class research platform leveraging resources; Special effort will be made to introduce the high level of latest scientific research into the teaching and training courses, in order to assimilate the latest and most outstanding engineering and technical resources for the training of students. By using project-based curriculum design, corporate design, and internships, students are trained to apply scientific knowledge and methods to solve practical problems "proficiency", to realize the active self-learning and teamwork, to promote "student-oriented learning in practice in the project development "concept.

"Idle boast the strong pass is a wall of iron, With firm strides we are crossing its summit", the young microwave-engineering department will continuously commits to cultivate outstanding students with a solid foundation, highlighting the practical ability of engineering innovation. We will do our best to play a key role from basic research to innovation in the relevant fields in China and strive for establishing a discipline of Microwave Engineering among the top-tier universities in China.
