Overview

In order to adapt to the needs of development of technology of Information Science in the 21st century, in the process of undergraduate education, our school has always adhered to the principle of combing science and technology, emphasizing the comprehensive cultivation, insisting on taking the undergraduate teaching as an important part of discipline construction, emphasizing the interaction of teaching and research, and continuously putting the research results into high quality teaching resources. University advocates the student-centered education. Driven by the actual research project, the school integrates extracurricular activities of science and technology, science and technology competition, professional experiment, course design, production practice and the graduation design (thesis) as an organic whole and pays attention to the long-term training of undergraduates.

The school has first-class teaching resources. In 2003, the school became one of first nine "National IC Talent Culture Bases", granted jointly by the Ministry of education and the Ministry of Science and Technology. In 2007, the "Interactive Training Experimental Zone Targeting at Innovative Talent Group” was approved by the Ministry of Education. In 2011, when the Ministry of Education chose 15 schools in universities to establish "The Special Experimental Zone of the Reform of Education and Teaching ", our school has become one of the 15 pilot schools.

 

Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering

This specialty is aimed at cultivating advanced talents with systematic and solid foundation of mathematics and physics, as well as good English skills. They are qualified with systematic learning of optoelectronics and opto-information, also basic theory, expertise and engineering practical skills in electronics, communication and computer. Students in this major are expected to develop a career in research, design, development and management in the relevant field.

Main courses: Calculus,Circuit Theory,Analogue Electronics,Digital Circuit and Logic Design,Principle and Application of Microcontroller,Physics Optics,Applied Optics,Laser Theory and Technology,Fourier Optics,Fiber Optics,Communication Theory,Optoelectronic Detect & Signal Processing,Advanced Programming Language (C),Signal and Linear System.

The school is also actively exploring the training mode of innovative talents of undergraduate students, laying emphasis on cultivating innovative spirit and practical ability. The school is in charge of the training and management of two experimental classes of outstanding undergraduate students of Qiming School of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, including “Wang Daheng” photoelectric experimental class and the experimental class of photoelectric information engineering with outstanding engineer training plan. Experimental classes select the university undergraduate university with solid foundations, autonomous learning ability and a strong sense of innovation. The classes design specialized talent training scheme to carry out the individualized training: “Wang Daheng” photoelectric experimental class focuses on training outstanding scientific research talents in the photoelectric area while the other focus on training the practical engineering talents in the photoelectric area.

School advocates that professors and associate professors teach the undergraduates. Those senior undergraduate students enter into research institutes and laboratories to participate in all actual projects has become a school tradition and formed into a standardized system. Through participation in actual projects, students get familiar with the frontier technology; apply theoretical knowledge learned in classroom to practice, greatly improving the students’ practical ability and analytical problem solving ability.

The school has actively carried out international cooperation. We jointly launched "Photoelectric Information Engineering" (Sino-France) with University of Paris Sud,UPMC,University of Strasburg and Institut Supérieur d'Electronique de Paris, in the form of “3 + 3". We directly select outstanding undergraduate students to study in France, for the master's degree and the engineer diploma.

The school learns from the management experience from first-class universities, adheres to the principle of international open selection of teachers, and insists on using the high-level scientific research to promote high-quality teaching. Our school implements the idea of “curriculum based, group oriented, mathematics consolidated, practice highlighted, project driven and collaborative education". We strive to cultivate the applied scientists and outstanding engineers with international competitiveness.

On November 20, 2014, Professor Huang Daren, leader of the Education Assessment Group of Ministry of education undergraduate said: “Regarding to the reform carried out in pilot school, the School of Optical And Electronic Information, the goal is implemented, the reform dynamics is deep and the effect is apparent. A lot of practices are very solid and can be copied and popularized."

Electronic Science and Technology

Being based on materials, focusing on design and fabrication of electronic devices, being oriented to system application, this specialty is aimed at cultivating advanced talents with expertise in one or two orientations of information acquisition, transmission, processing, storage and display. Students in this major are expected to develop a career in research, design, development and management in the relevant field.

IC Design and Integrated System

Being based on semiconductor devices, focusing on design of very large scale integration and semiconductor technology development, being oriented to computer architecture and embedded systems integration and application, this specialty is aimed at cultivating advanced talents who are expected to develop a career in research, design, development and management in the IC field.

Main courses: Principles of Computer Organization, Processor Architecture, Principles and Design of Embedded System, Digital Signal Process, Semiconductor Physics, Microelectronic Device and IC Design, Hardware Description Language and Design of Digital System, Microelectronic Process, Design Method of Digital IC, CMOS Analog Integrated Circuit,  Package and System Test for IC.

Microelectronics Science and Engineering

Being based on ultra clean, ultra pure and ultra precision machining technology, this specialty is a new-rising discipline relying on physics, electronics, material science, integrated circuit design and manufacturing, etc. It sticks to the combination of science and technology, attaches great importance to basic theories, and emphasizes on practical skills. Students in this major are expected to have the ability to design and research micro-nano electronic materials, device, circuit, layout, technology and system, and develop a career in research, design, development and management in microelectronics science and engineering field.

Admission/Requirments and Policies

 The University has been accepting international students studying in China since 1960s. For over 50 years it has cultivated more than 3000 international students of various majors from more than120 countries and districts. Most of them have obtained bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or doctoral degree that conferred by HUST. They have become outstanding engineers and technicians, famous medical experts, government administrators or officials in their embassies in China after graduation.

Currently, there are more than 2,000 international students from 120countries studying in HUST, out of which 94% are degree students and 40% are masters and doctors.

III. Admission Criteria

Admissions decisions are based on the candidate’s academic achievements and potential, as well as his/her personal accomplishments.

The admissions committee reviews a number of factors like records of studies such as Grade Point Average (GPA), characteristics of institutions attended, academic papers published, academic goals (study plan or research proposal), personal statement, willingness to study at HUST , letters of recommendation and language proficiency. Other achievement records and specific qualifications are also taken into consideration.

1. Eligibility

A. Master’s and General Scholar’s program

He or she holds a Bachelor’s degree, or is considered by the admissions committee to have an acceptable intellectual competence at the level of someone holding an equivalent or higher degree.

B. Doctoral and Visiting Scholar’s program

He or she holds a Master’s degree, or is considered by the admissions committee to have an acceptable intellectual competence at the level of someone holding an equivalent or higher degree.

2. GPA

A. Master’s and General Scholar’s program

He or she holds a record of studies such as Grade Point Average (GPA) above 2.8 (out of 4) or with an acceptable equivalent competence.

B. Doctoral and Visiting Scholar’s program

He or she holds a record of studies such as Grade Point Average (GPA) above 2.8 (out of 4) or with an acceptable equivalent competence.

3. Language Proficiency

A. English Medium program

Applicants should submit a score report of a recognized English Proficiency Test.

TOEFL (IBT 80), IELTS 5.5 or higher; or other official English test recognized by HUST. (NoteTOEFL code of HUST is 4903 and GRE DI Code is1031.)

Other official English language proficiency test may also be accepted by HUST but the level need to be decided by HUST for admission.

B. Chinese Medium program

Applicants should submit a score report of Chinese Proficiency Test.

180 or above on the new HSK (level 4) for medical, engineering, science, economics, management, law and Education programs; 180 or above on the new HSK (level 5) for Chinese literature, history, philosophy programs

(Note: If the candidate has no elementary Chinese study experience and is quite excellent, the university could decide to offer him or her one year Chinese Language Training before the start of Academic study. And this one year’s training is covered by the scholarship.)
